Reddit Stock Jumps 12% on S&P 500 Inclusion as Index Funds Prepare for Major Buying
Reddit shares jumped more than 12% after S&P Dow Jones Indices selected the company for inclusion in the S&P 500, with JPMorgan estimating index funds may need to buy about 16.7 million shares.
Why it matters: S&P 500 inclusion creates immediate institutional buying pressure for Reddit and confirms its growing significance in public technology markets.
Reddit shares surged after the social-media company was selected to join the S&P 500, marking another milestone in its transition from internet community platform to large public technology company. S&P Dow Jones Indices said Reddit will enter the benchmark index, replacing AvalonBay Communities. JPMorgan analysts estimate funds tracking the index could need to purchase about 16.7 million Reddit shares, nearly three times the stock’s average daily trading volume since its 2024 IPO. The inclusion does not change Reddit’s underlying fundamentals, but it substantially expands the universe of institutional portfolios required to own the stock and creates a significant short-term demand event for shares.
