OpenAI Veteran Brad Lightcap Leaves to Start New Venture as AI Talent Spinoff Cycle Accelerates

Longtime OpenAI executive Brad Lightcap is leaving the ChatGPT maker to start a new venture, adding another prominent founder candidate to the rapidly expanding ecosystem surrounding frontier artificial intelligence. Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018 and later became chief operating officer, playing major roles in business strategy, partnerships, infrastructure and global expansion. In April, he moved from the COO position into a role focused on special projects. He has not yet disclosed what the new venture will build. OpenAI said Lightcap’s responsibilities had already shifted away from managing major teams during recent months, and the company does not expect his departure to disrupt day-to-day operations. CEO Sam Altman publicly expressed support for Lightcap’s next move. The departure is notable because frontier AI laboratories are increasingly becoming incubators for a new generation of founders. Executives and researchers leaving companies such as OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Anthropic and xAI can bring deep technical or commercial experience, investor relationships and an understanding of where current AI systems still leave major unsolved problems.
