South Korea Targets 100-Qubit Quantum Processor and 2030 Moon Landing in New Tech Push

Reuters · 2026-08-12

South Korea’s Seven Major SEED strategy targets a domestic error-corrected 100-qubit quantum processor by 2029, a Moon landing in 2030, and major investment in strategic technologies.

Why it matters: The roadmap signals a national push to convert South Korea’s semiconductor strength into leadership across quantum, space, BCI and other strategic technologies.

South Korea is broadening its technology ambitions beyond artificial intelligence and conventional semiconductors with a national strategy spanning quantum computing, space, brain-computer interfaces, energy and critical-material supply chains. The government’s new Seven Major SEED initiative includes a target to develop a domestically produced error-corrected 100-qubit quantum processor by 2029 and land a Korean spacecraft on the Moon in 2030. A second lunar lander is targeted for 2032. The quantum target builds on an existing government program that plans to secure a domestically developed 50-qubit quantum computer during 2026 before moving toward the 100-qubit error-correcting system in 2029. The roadmap also includes commercialization of brain-computer-interface products by 2035, development of an independent Korean low-Earth-orbit satellite communications network, AI-enabled biotechnology and autonomous laboratories. South Korea is simultaneously treating materials and energy as strategic technology infrastructure, including plans to strengthen critical-mineral processing and invest trillions of won in domestic materials, parts and equipment. If executed, the initiative would extend Korea’s existing strength in semiconductors and memory into several of the technologies expected to define the next decade of computing.
