OpenAI and the South Australian government have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore a broader artificial-intelligence partnership spanning workforce development, technology investment and infrastructure. South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas signed the agreement at OpenAI's San Francisco headquarters after meeting company president and co-founder Greg Brockman. The parties say the partnership will explore AI skills development, local innovation, investment and deployment across industries including healthcare, defence, energy, space and agriculture. The agreement also opens discussions around AI infrastructure and investment aligned with South Australia's data-center strategy. OpenAI has already been expanding its Australian infrastructure strategy through OpenAI for Australia and a separate MOU with NEXTDC. The new South Australia MOU does not yet represent a committed OpenAI data-center project or a disclosed capital investment. Its significance is strategic: governments are increasingly competing for the compute infrastructure, skilled workforce and research ecosystems surrounding frontier AI.
