Amazon Plans Off-Grid Texas AI Data Center at 7.65-GW GW Ranch

Chron / Houston Chronicle · 2026-08-08

Amazon is planning a major data-center campus at GW Ranch in Pecos County, Texas, using new on-site generation initially rather than relying on the ERCOT grid as AI infrastructure demand accelerates.

Why it matters: The project shows how grid interconnection delays and AI power density are pushing hyperscalers toward vertically integrated power campuses, expanding demand for generation, substations, transformers, switchgear, protection and energy storage.

Amazon is planning a major data-center campus at Pacifico Energy's GW Ranch in Pecos County, Texas, where the project is designed to begin with new on-site generation rather than depending immediately on the ERCOT grid. Reporting published August 8 says Amazon confirmed the campus and described a path toward grid-connected service as interconnection becomes available.

GW Ranch is permitted for up to 7.65 gigawatts of gas-fired generation. Pacifico Energy says the private-grid campus can combine that generation with up to 1.8 GW of battery storage and 750 MWac of solar, with more than 5 GW of dedicated power possible as the project scales. The developer positions the architecture as a way to shorten time-to-power for hyperscale and AI workloads while avoiding conventional grid-interconnection delays.

The project is another sign that electrical infrastructure is becoming a first-order strategic constraint in AI data-center development. At this scale, power generation, substations, medium-voltage distribution, transformers, switchgear, protection systems, storage and power-quality controls must be planned alongside land and compute capacity. For equipment manufacturers, contractors and investors, the AI buildout is increasingly a critical-power and grid-infrastructure story as much as a computing story.
