Siemens and Infineon Bring Silicon-Carbide Semiconductor Breakers to Data Centers

Siemens · 2026-06-08

Siemens and Infineon are collaborating on semiconductor circuit breakers for data centers, factories and battery systems. Infineon will supply silicon-carbide power modules for Siemens SENTRON 3QD2 breakers, which use semiconductor switching and protection algorithms for microsecond-scale interruption.

Why it matters: Circuit protection is becoming a power-semiconductor application, opening a new technology layer in data-center electrical distribution.

Siemens and Infineon are combining silicon-carbide power electronics with semiconductor circuit protection for data centers and other power-critical facilities. Infineon will supply CoolSiC power modules for Siemens SENTRON 3QD2 semiconductor circuit breakers.

The companies say the design can interrupt faults in the microsecond range, far faster than conventional electromechanical systems. That speed is particularly relevant in DC grids, where fault currents can rise rapidly and where sensitive power electronics may require much faster isolation.

Silicon carbide has already become important in high-efficiency power conversion. Its move into protection equipment shows how circuit breakers are becoming another semiconductor market. For AI data centers, that could mean higher power density, faster fault clearing, tighter integration with DC architectures and more digital visibility into the protection layer.
