ABB’s SACE Infinitus Shows Solid-State Breakers Moving Into DC Data Centers

ABB · 2026-07-16

ABB says its SACE Infinitus solid-state circuit breaker is available at 2,500 amps and certified to IEC 60947-2. The company links growing demand for the technology to a broader shift from AC toward DC distribution in data centers, marine systems and microgrids.

Why it matters: The shift toward DC distribution creates a new protection market where interruption speed, losses and digital control matter as much as mechanical endurance.

ABB is expanding the commercial case for solid-state circuit breakers with its SACE Infinitus family, including a 2,500-amp product certified to IEC 60947-2. Unlike conventional breakers that depend on mechanical contacts to interrupt current, solid-state breakers use power semiconductors for much faster disconnection.

ABB says the move toward DC distribution is creating new applications in data centers, marine electrification and smart microgrids. DC systems can reduce conversion stages in architectures where generation, storage and many loads already operate internally on direct current.

Protection is one of the harder engineering problems in those systems because DC fault currents do not naturally cross zero the way AC currents do. Semiconductor-based interruption can therefore become more important as data centers evaluate higher-voltage DC distribution and increasingly power-dense compute environments.
