The AI data-center buildout is colliding with an already constrained electrical-equipment supply chain. Reuters reports that utilities and developers are ordering transformers and other grid equipment years in advance as manufacturers struggle to match demand.
Large power transformers face some of the longest waits, but circuit breakers and switchgear are also moving into tighter supply. Reuters cited high-voltage circuit-breaker lead times of roughly 125 weeks in the second half of 2025, up from 77 weeks in 2023, while some generator step-up transformers exceeded 160 weeks by early 2026.
For data-center developers, the implication is straightforward: computing equipment is not the only long-lead item. Switchgear lineups, breakers, transformers and interconnection equipment increasingly determine energization dates. Procurement strategy is becoming part of speed-to-power strategy.
