DeepSeek Seeks Nearly $8 Billion at $74 Billion Valuation as IPO Plans Regain Momentum

Reuters · 2026-08-06

DeepSeek has resumed a funding round seeking nearly $8 billion at a valuation close to 500 billion yuan, or about $74 billion, with Monolith Management reportedly in talks to participate.

Why it matters: The round would provide a major private-market benchmark for the economics of frontier AI development in China, but the financing remains preliminary and should be described as sought rather than completed.

Chinese artificial-intelligence developer DeepSeek has reportedly resumed efforts to raise nearly $8 billion in new financing at a valuation of approximately $74 billion.

The company is seeking a valuation close to 500 billion yuan, while investment firm Monolith Management is among the investors discussing participation, Bloomberg reported, according to Reuters.

The round has not been completed. DeepSeek had previously explored fundraising at a similar valuation ahead of a potential mainland Chinese initial public offering. The company later paused those discussions before reportedly restarting the process.

A successful transaction would create an important valuation benchmark for the Chinese AI sector. DeepSeek became globally prominent by demonstrating that highly competitive AI models could be developed and operated with different cost structures from those associated with the largest U.S. frontier-model developers.

Its approach helped intensify competition around open models, inference cost and price-performance. An approximately $74 billion valuation would indicate that private investors continue to assign substantial value to that strategy despite the enormous capital requirements associated with model development and computing infrastructure.

The financing remains preliminary, so valuation and participation could change before any transaction closes.
