Global demand for artificial-intelligence infrastructure is helping drive a sharp increase in Chinese technology exports even as trade restrictions between China and the United States intensify.
China’s total exports increased 23.9% year over year in July, according to customs data reported by Reuters. High-technology exports expanded 40.7% in the first seven months of the year, while semiconductor exports over that period nearly doubled in value from a year earlier.
The figures indicate that the AI infrastructure boom is affecting a much broader manufacturing base than the companies producing frontier accelerators. Servers, memory, networking equipment, electronics and other components all feed into expanding data-center supply chains.
China has also diversified its export markets, with stronger shipments to Europe, Southeast Asia and other regions helping offset pressure from U.S. restrictions. The result is a complicated policy picture: governments are trying to reduce technology-supply-chain dependence on China at the same time that global AI investment is increasing demand for products those supply chains manufacture.
