SK Hynix Approves $38.3 Billion Expansion as AI Memory Demand Accelerates

Wall Street Journal · 2026-08-07

SK Hynix approved roughly $38.3 billion of investment through 2031 for fabs in Yongin and Cheongju as demand rises for high-bandwidth memory and NAND used in AI infrastructure.

Why it matters: HBM and NAND capacity are becoming core constraints in AI infrastructure, not secondary components.

SK Hynix has approved approximately $38.3 billion in new semiconductor-manufacturing investments as demand for high-bandwidth memory and other components used in artificial-intelligence systems continues to expand.

The company’s board authorized 54.3 trillion won of spending through 2031. The investment will support new fabrication capacity in Yongin and Cheongju.

The Yongin Y2 plant is expected to manufacture DRAM products including high-bandwidth memory, or HBM, which is used alongside accelerators in AI servers. The Cheongju M17 plant will focus on NAND flash.

The investment shows how the AI infrastructure boom is translating into semiconductor capacity well beyond GPUs. As AI clusters grow, memory bandwidth and storage become increasingly important constraints, putting suppliers such as SK Hynix at the center of the infrastructure buildout.
