SpaceX and Tesla plan to initially invest $16.8 billion in a massive Texas semiconductor complex intended to secure more of the computing capacity needed for artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, robotics and space-based data centers.
The Terafab facility will be built in Grimes County and is planned to span approximately 100 million square feet.
The companies expect Terafab to produce processors for Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robots and Cybercabs as well as high-performance chips intended for SpaceX’s proposed orbital AI infrastructure.
Terafab represents another step toward vertical integration among the largest AI infrastructure buyers. Instead of relying exclusively on semiconductor manufacturers and cloud providers, companies consuming enormous amounts of computing power are increasingly investing directly in power generation, data centers, networking and chip manufacturing.
