SoftBank’s Intel Gain Masks Profit Decline as Its OpenAI Bet Expands

Reuters · 2026-08-06

SoftBank reported lower quarterly profit despite large investment gains tied to Intel, while its exposure to OpenAI and AI infrastructure financing continued to expand.

Why it matters: SoftBank’s AI strategy is increasingly tied to leveraged investments, OpenAI exposure and infrastructure bets rather than only public-equity gains.

SoftBank Group reported lower quarterly profit even as gains from its Intel investment supported the Japanese technology conglomerate’s results.

Net profit for the quarter declined 18% from a year earlier to ¥347.3 billion. SoftBank recorded approximately ¥1.86 trillion in investment gains, with much of that amount connected to its Intel holding.

The company recorded no new valuation gain from its OpenAI investment during the quarter. That does not represent a writedown, but it contrasts with earlier periods in which rising private-market valuations materially increased SoftBank’s reported investment gains.

SoftBank is continuing to expand its exposure to artificial intelligence.

The company reportedly obtained a $10 billion loan secured against its OpenAI stake and plans to invest another $20 billion in the AI developer. Its cumulative OpenAI investment could reach approximately $64.6 billion by October, giving SoftBank an estimated 13% interest.

SoftBank is also allocating capital to robotics, data centers and digital infrastructure through transactions involving ABB and DigitalBridge.

The strategy gives SoftBank substantial exposure to AI growth, but it also increases financing and concentration risk. Future returns will increasingly depend on whether OpenAI and the broader AI infrastructure market can produce cash flows commensurate with the capital being committed.
