eBay Revenue Beats Expectations as Collectibles and Refurbished Electronics Drive Growth

Reuters · 2026-08-05

eBay beat quarterly revenue expectations as collectibles, authenticated goods and refurbished electronics supported marketplace growth.

Why it matters: eBay’s growth is tied to marketplace niches where trust, authentication and specialist inventory can defend against general retail competition.

eBay reported stronger-than-expected quarterly revenue as its strategy of targeting enthusiast buyers gained momentum.

Second-quarter revenue reached $3.13 billion, exceeding the $3.02 billion analyst consensus.

Gross merchandise volume, the value of goods sold through the marketplace, increased 15% to $22.4 billion.

The company expects third-quarter revenue between $3.07 billion and $3.12 billion, above Wall Street’s average estimate of $2.97 billion.

eBay has concentrated investment in categories where selection, authentication and specialist knowledge can create a competitive advantage. Those areas include trading cards, collectibles, luxury products, auto parts and refurbished electronics.

The strategy is designed to distinguish eBay from large general-purpose retailers and low-cost commerce platforms.

Collectibles and authenticated goods can generate stronger buyer loyalty because inventory is difficult to replicate across competing marketplaces. Refurbished electronics also benefit from consumer interest in lower prices and product reuse.

The results arrive while eBay faces an unusual corporate issue. The company rejected an unsolicited acquisition proposal from GameStop valued at approximately $56 billion, describing the bid as neither credible nor attractive. GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen has indicated that he remains interested in pursuing a combination.

For now, eBay’s operating performance suggests that its specialist-category strategy is generating renewed marketplace growth independently of the acquisition speculation.
