Optical transceivers convert electrical signals into light and transmit information through fiber-optic cables. They provide high-speed connections linking processors, networking equipment and storage systems inside modern data centers.

Their strategic importance is increasing as AI clusters grow larger. Thousands of accelerators must exchange information with extremely low latency. As copper connections reach distance, bandwidth and energy-efficiency limits, operators are deploying more optical networking equipment.

U.S. officials are reportedly concerned that Chinese components embedded inside data centers could enable data theft, malware installation or service disruption.

The proposal has not been finalized, but it signals that optical networking is becoming a national-security priority and another potential constraint on the cost and speed of U.S. AI infrastructure buildout.
