China’s CXMT Plans Another Beijing DRAM Plant as AI Memory Competition Intensifies
Chinese memory-chip manufacturer CXMT is considering another Beijing DRAM plant as China expands production during an AI-driven memory shortage.
Why it matters: Memory availability is becoming as strategically important to AI infrastructure as accelerators and electricity.
Chinese memory-chip manufacturer CXMT is considering building a second semiconductor plant in Beijing as it expands production during an AI-driven global memory shortage.
The proposed facility would add to CXMT's existing DRAM capacity as China accelerates efforts to reduce dependence on Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron.
The timing is important because AI servers require large amounts of DRAM and high-bandwidth memory. Existing suppliers have benefited from tight capacity and rising prices as cloud companies build larger computing clusters.
CXMT remains smaller than the global leaders and still faces technical, manufacturing and trade restrictions before it can compete equally in the most advanced memory categories.
Even so, its expansion introduces a significant new variable into the AI infrastructure supply chain.
