French telecommunications company Orange and infrastructure investor Morrison are planning a jointly controlled data-center business designed to serve growing artificial-intelligence and cloud demand.
The proposed venture would target hundreds of megawatts of capacity in France and be supported by a multi-billion-euro investment program.
The plan demonstrates why telecommunications companies are becoming strategically important to the AI infrastructure market. They already control fiber networks, enterprise customer relationships, operating facilities and sites connected to national power systems.
Europe also wants more computing infrastructure located under European legal and operational control. A French data-center platform could address demand from companies and public institutions concerned about data residency and digital sovereignty.
The project remains conditional on definitive documentation, consultations and approvals.
