MediaTek Approves $5 Billion Financing Plan for AI Data-Center Chips
MediaTek approved a $5 billion financing framework as it expands from smartphone processors into custom AI data-center chips for cloud providers.
Why it matters: Custom AI accelerators are becoming a major battleground for chip designers, foundries and cloud providers.
MediaTek has approved a $5 billion financing framework as the Taiwanese chip designer expands beyond smartphones and into custom artificial-intelligence processors for major cloud providers.
The company said its first custom AI chip is scheduled to begin production in the fourth quarter of 2026, with another design expected to reach volume production in 2028.
MediaTek estimates that the custom data-center AI-chip market could reach $80 billion in 2027 and is targeting a 15% to 20% share. Management also expects more than $2 billion in AI-chip revenue during 2026.
The financing gives MediaTek flexibility to fund chip development, capacity and infrastructure as it competes for hyperscaler ASIC contracts. It should not be read as an immediate $5 billion capital-spending commitment.
The expansion comes as MediaTek's traditional handset business weakens. Mobile-chip revenue declined in the second quarter as component costs and weaker smartphone demand pressured device manufacturers.
For investors, the central question is whether MediaTek can turn smartphone-chip expertise into a durable position in the higher-margin data-center market.
