More Than 1,100 AI Workers Ask U.S. Government to Help Pace Frontier Development

Pacing the Frontier · 2026-07-28

More than 1,100 workers associated with leading AI organizations have asked the U.S. government to support international tools that could deliberately slow automated frontier AI development when emerging risks require more time to manage.

Why it matters: A coordinated pacing mechanism could materially change frontier-model release schedules, enterprise procurement and international AI competition.

More than 1,100 workers associated with leading artificial-intelligence organizations have signed a public statement asking the U.S. government to support international tools that could deliberately slow frontier AI development when emerging risks require more time to manage.

Signatories are associated with organizations including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral and Thinking Machines. They signed in their individual capacities rather than on behalf of their employers.

The statement focuses on the possibility that AI systems may soon automate larger portions of AI research itself. That could accelerate the rate at which new models improve and reduce the time available for developers, governments and enterprises to evaluate new capabilities.

The signatories are not calling for a permanent ban on advanced AI. They are asking for technical monitoring systems and international governance mechanisms that would give policymakers the option to pause or slow development across the frontier rather than forcing one company or country to act alone.

For enterprises, a formal pacing framework could affect when new models become available, how vendors document safety testing and whether high-capability releases require additional review before deployment. It could also create competitive tension if U.S. laboratories face controls that do not apply equally to developers in other countries.

The statement shows that concern about AI development speed is no longer limited to outside researchers and regulators. It is now being expressed publicly by employees working inside many of the companies driving the frontier.
