Apple Briefly Becomes a $5 Trillion Company

Reuters · 2026-07-28

Apple briefly crossed a $5 trillion market capitalization on July 28, becoming only the second public company to reach the threshold after Nvidia before closing below the milestone.

Why it matters: Apple’s milestone highlights a market shift toward companies that can show durable cash flow while limiting exposure to the escalating cost of AI infrastructure.

Apple briefly surpassed a market value of $5 trillion on July 28, becoming only the second public company to cross the milestone after Nvidia. Apple shares reached an intraday high of $342.89, giving the iPhone maker an estimated valuation of approximately $5.04 trillion before the stock eased and the company closed below the threshold.

The milestone reflects a sharp increase in Apple shares during 2026 and renewed investor confidence in the company’s ability to grow without matching the enormous artificial-intelligence infrastructure spending of several competing technology groups. Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon and Meta have committed large amounts of capital to data centers, accelerators and energy capacity. Apple has taken a comparatively restrained approach, relying more heavily on partnerships and integration of external AI services into its devices.

That strategy has helped Apple preserve cash flow while investors increasingly question how quickly the wider technology industry can earn returns from hundreds of billions of dollars in AI expenditure. Strong consumer demand and Apple’s decision to maintain iPhone pricing have also supported the stock.

Crossing $5 trillion does not change Apple’s operations by itself, but it underlines the market’s confidence in the company’s installed device base, services revenue and ability to monetize AI without owning every layer of the underlying infrastructure. The next test will be whether Apple’s earnings and product roadmap justify a valuation previously reached only by Nvidia.
